Mujer Cañari.

Description

A woman of the Cañari people from Sisid

The community's hat is made of sheep's wool, featuring a short brim and a round crown. Its defining characteristic in this region is the use of bold, vibrant color accents, which serve as a significant symbol of cultural identity, marital status, and a connection to the land.

The cross she wears is part of a deeply rooted religious tradition in which the Catholicism introduced during the colonial era coexists with an Indigenous identity that has preserved its language, customs, and worldview. More than just an object of devotion, the cross represents family memory, intergenerational continuity, and the meeting of two worlds.
